D.U.S.K. Part III
Hello, everyone! Been awhile since I updated, but here we go right back on full blast into runesruby’s D.U.S.K. Okay, this time I want to give my rants on certain characters of the series. Let’s start with one of the main ones of this first book: Collin Aube.
(fanart by me)
Character: Collin Aube the Vampire Princess Species/Monster: Vampire Hair Color: Black Eye Color: Green Siblings: Yes
Collin shows up at the beginning of the first chapter. He seemed to have more-or-less the typical life in Lethe - annoying and gay roommate, doting and straightforward landlady, getting up and going to work, and the object of much teasing. But he, like so many of the others, harbors his fair share of secrets.
Nightmares plague him even years after his arrival into Illusions. Only boy in a group of sisters, you come to learn the rather graphic and terrifying past Collin had. The memories of these sisters, particularly one, and the pain they bring come to a head during the large fights that happen later in the book.
Veering you away from spoilers, I like Collin. He has his moments of super-cuteness then others you can totally tell how stubborn he can be; times when he is so caring then the times when you just kind of want to facepalm. And why do I get playboy vibes from him I must be high. And can I just gush how adorable chibi Collin is and that oh man I want to hug you - there, there, it’ll be fine *sobs*
As one of the more main characters of this book, shit, of course, goes down with him around. His tangles with Lucy and Angel in particular seemed to be when the most shit happened. Ironic too since his interest seems to bounce off between the two… Anyway~
For all his typical charming boyish-ness, you really feel pretty bad for him near the end, what with all the secrets and the unraveling of his past coming to confront him in the present. Collin, really, I’ll hug you, I know you didn’t mean any of it *gross sobbing*
Here’s the link to purchase D.U.S.K.: https://www.createspace.com/3737456 I can’t seem to link up Parts I and II, however just look in the D.U.S.K. tag and you shall find them! While you’re at it, go on and track the tag!!
Greetings, mortals, I present myself to thee again in order to bring more shameless advertisement to my twin, runesruby’s, book D.U.S.K.
This time around I figured I’d give more-or-less my impressions of it. I started out reading the story when Twin casually suggested I sort of beta-read it.
The prologue was very good and set up a good, tense space to become familiar with the characters as well as an introduction to the myriad of mysteries within the series. It was sort of confusing at first, mostly because of the introduction of so many colorful characters at once, but in that respect, I’ll make a probably horrible connection with the manga series Fruits Basket.
Now while the genre and style for D.U.S.K. is much, much different from Fruits Basket, I think a lot of the complexity and ability to enjoy is similar. D.U.S.K. crafted together a whole bunch of characters that you find out all connect with each other, in such interesting ways. It was so awesome to read a scene or a dialogue and just suddenly be like, “LGTBKJGN THIS WAS FORESHADOWED, I KNOW WHAT THIS IS TALKING ABOUT!”
Just like Fruits Basket (shut up, mortals, you know you liked how everyone somehow knew everyone and the plot was so thought outand lbjhngkln THIS STORY IS LIKE THAT OKAY!)
Mysteries and secrets of the past are one of the driving forces of the story, but there’s also some weird shit going down in the present. Enemies and familiar faces are all converging upon the main characters as they journey to the human world from their home realm in Illusions.
Illusions is the world the (dead) cast call their home. Each of them was brought back, given a sort of “second chance” to live again, but as some sort of creature - take your pick of the ghost, vampire, fortune teller, zombie who are all a part of them. But more on that next D.U.S.K. post.
D.U.S.K. switches points of view a lot, which actually isn’t as confusing as it sounds. The rotating perspective gives plenty of opportunities to peek into a character’s past. That’s one thing, no matter what you think, the flashbacks/dreams/nightmares are veryimportant. Keep up with them.
I won’t reveal what happens in the end of course, only that after all the intense shit that went down, it was that slightly less tense moment when everyone is just trying to get over everything that happened. Needless to say, Twin left the ending wide open for its sequel, but of course, you all must read this first! D.U.S.K. is now currently available for purchase~
Next time around I’ll do mindless spazzing of the individual characters, as my shameless advertising continues.
Hey guys, you might want to pay attention to this post here.
Yeah, stop scrollling because *leans in and whispers* I’m gonna blow your mother-effin’ mind.
Because around last year, I was introduced to this story my twin, my lovely talented twin, wrote, called D.U.S.K. (Dusk). Really. It’s bloody amazing, and the bloody can be literal if you’re so inclined considering the number of fights, the tension, and oh yes, let’s not forget most of the characters within are dead.
(Keep reading because the part where I blow your mother-effin’ mind comes soon.)
So in appreciation of this story, I’m doing shameless advertising of it! Why? This series needs a godfrickin’ following, it needs a badass fandom. You peasants don’t believe me? Read the summary yourself:
“Artemis, darling, can we please just get this show on the road I’m a very busy person, you know, I’ve got villages to wreak havoc on after all.” Artemis nodded, Cassandra was right; “Ah yes…I just called you here to inform you on something… In a few hours, it’ll be Halloween.” Cassandra looked skeptical. “And…? What does one of your little holidays have to do with me?” Artemis grinned, cat like. Cassandra couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen that expression on the hunter’s face. She could remember it spelled trouble though. “My research tells me there were seven of you… currently five though. The oldest is dead, yes, but the youngest… the sweet baby boy…,” she droned on purposefully, watching Cassandra’s defenses slip as the demons expression darkened, her smile gone. Artemis almost purred. “Last I saw him I was slicing up his precious little body before the reaper stole him and took him to the middle ground. Now you know as well as I do he’s untouchable there… but sources say he’s coming back to this realm for one night. Right into my lap really…” Cassandra’s face read death as she spoke. “He might have been safe earlier, but today is that one day all you disgusting beasts come out to play. They’re all fair game. And your brother is mine.”
Got you curious, eh? Bet you want to know what’s going to happen, hmm~?
LUCKILY YOU CAN. (Pay attention, this is the mind-blowing part.) A few months back in the summer, Twin got her book to get published and available for sale on a website~ SO NOW YOU CAN TOTALLY GO BUY IT.
Really, guys, I wouldn’t advertise this unless it was actually a good story. As a matter of fact, I’m eagerly going to nom on the second book once I get the chance. I expect others to be on the same boat with me, cornering Twin at every turn to bother her about more sequels.
Which reminds me, if you have any questions about the book or want to poke her in general, her Tumblr is runesruby. I’ll keep advertising until the appropriate date of October 31st~ That gives you all plenty of opportunities to know more about the book and series, and to consequently get sucked right into it.
You won’t regret it.
